Problem of Practice
The problem of practice that I chose focused on decreasing the need for classroom management assistance from administration in seventh and eighth grade math classes. The math teachers from these two grade levels are beginning teachers and are part of a global partner network to recruit teachers from other countries.
Quarter one math benchmark showed that 15% of students in each grade were proficient. I implemented the PBIS strategy Check In/Check Out for the seventh and eighth grade. Teachers participated in a PBIS training and professional development to assist in the implementation of Check In/Check Out in their classrooms and grade level. I collected feedback on the usefulness of the strategy and math assessment scores five months after implementation. I used this data to determine that the Check In/Check Out strategy does, in fact, decrease needs for classroom management assistance from administration. As a result of this strategy, administrative intervention decreased. The improvement in classroom behaviors led to an increase in math scores.
After reflecting on the results of the implementation of PBIS and the Check In/Check Out strategy, I devised a plan to completely incorporate PBIS as a school wide initiative in the fall.
